Guides - Almanor Fishing Adventures

The Almanor Fishing Association has raised and released over 1 million fish into Lake Almanor over the years

This Fish Pen Project  at the Hamelton Branch is in jeopardy and is at the mercy of old man winter.

An aggressive plan to rework, repair, and refloat this very successful program is now under way, and the first phase is set for April, right after the current fish are released.

We could use your support. If you’ve fished Lake Almanor in the past you know how important a program like this is, and once it’s gone it’s tough to restart. You can show your support by just joining the Almanor Fishing Association, Its easy just click on this link, www.almanorfishingassociation.com  and print the application form.

                                                                 Almanor Fishing Report

                                                                      and Lake Status.

Where to start? That is the question.

There's so many spots around Lake Almanor that are" turning on" these days.

I have been all over the entire lake the past week, fishing and scouting for the next hot bite.

Last month it was the east shore, last week it was the west shore, and currently still is.

Insect hatch's start, peak, and then decline. Fish move for the food. Most of the fish we have checked are feeding on bug larva; very few have had any smelt in them. My boat the "Almanor King" has 138 fish this month and there’s still another week to go.

Here’s the latest.

Surface temps @ 53.4 degrees.

Water Clarity, very good about 9 ft.

Launching at the Canyon Dam Public ramp offers good trolling along the east shore, and you can start trolling right from the ramp. This is a good producing area, and most boats hug the shore. I hooked more fish running about 100 yd. off shore and rigged down from 6 ft. early and down to 14ft. later in the morning. Threaded crawlers are always a good bait to troll through area. We have seeing fish in the 2 lb. range, mostly Browns, followed by Rainbows and an occasional King Salmon. The Kings are looking very good for this early in the season, and running a little bigger and have been up to 4.3 lbs. but most have been 2.5 to 3 lbs.

Also, at Canyon Dam is Geritol Cove, a good place to float some Power bait off the bottom, fly fish, or soak a crawler from your boat, Kayak, float  tube, or lawn chair.

The other public launch is the USFS ramp on the west shore, providing instant access to the Almanor West area, which I have been at for the last few days.

Some great fishing is happening from the USFS ramp to Almanor West Point, out to Airport flats, or along the shore line.

Most boats have been staying close to the shore, no more than 300 yds. out, and I saw a few nets go out.

We have been about 800+ yds. off shore and been pounding them. Mostly fat, feisty Rainbows running from 1.75 lbs. to 2.5 lbs...not real big fish... but fistey!  Browns too, all these fish are full of "POP", and I don't mean soda.

Some of the best battling fish I have seen in a long time... I was trolling just 2 rods most days...because that all you needed.

This past week, I witnessed some of the most vicious take downs I have ever seen.

Lines exploding out of the releases...as if you just snagged the bottom. OMG! That is not, repeat, not the bottom!

2 seconds after you get the rod in your hand, the Rainbow goes airborne... like a rocket, jumping three times and then diving, screaming off line as the loosely set drag sings the happy song...

There's so many people smiling we could open a tooth bank...looks like the Osmond family reunion.

These fish are close to the surface, we hardy marked any fish under the boat, but the side finders were marking fish all morning...don't know about the afternoon, because we limited out every morning.

What's good about Almanor West and the surrounding area is there's plenty of open water providing lots of room to maneuver, and I expect fishing pressure in this area to be heavy this weekend.

Also there appears to be lots of fish scattered all over these flats. The best bite is early, real early, like fishing at 5:30 am. at least.

Needle fish, in Cop Car, Silver Prism, and Pearl, also Red and Gold spoons, like Sep's Pro Secrets, and Shiners, Florescent orange and pink Pro Secrets and Rainbow Runners, rigged down to 6 and 8 ft..the couple of times we did run 4 rods, we had the deeper ones set at 14 and 16 ft. down, and all got hits, but the 6 and 8ft. settings got the most action.

Recommended scents are Pro-Cure "Trophy Trout" and "Carp Spit", mixed together in 50/50 portions...

Recommended Releases and Stacker clips are the "Sep’s Sure Releases"

Ayoobs Ace Hardware in Chester on Main St... has all this stuff. Tell'em Doug sent ya.

There's some cool weather coming in this week and this could affect the feeding cycles, so be patient, if it doesn't happen early.

If you’re after Salmon, Big Springs should be up and running always is this time of year.

Anchovy tails with Pro-Cure Herring Super Gel, 4ft. off the bottom. Also the deep hole on the east shore close to the dam called the Snag is another known Salmon hang out.

The Hamilton Branch has cleared up. Rock and stump jumpers wearing clod hoppers are working the edges with power baits off the bottom, or crawler's and meal worms under a bobber. Panther Martins and Kastmasters are good lures to use above the powerhouse.

The east side of the peninsula from the Rec. Area #1 ramp to the A-frame has bug hatches beginning, and lots small groups of smelt moving about.. This is the next hot spot, and fish are here right now. So when Almanor West waters get too much pressure you might want to troll these lanes... I guarantee it.

Also, trolling the mouth of the Ham Branch to Big Springs is going to be happening as the waters continue to warm.

There are many areas around Lake Almanor that are happening.

Spring time is here, it’s a healthy lake, with lots of good water

I don't always drink water, but when I do, I prefer Sierra Nevada! stay thirsty my friends!

SAFETY FIRST,

Lake levels are rising, watch for floating hazards.

Dress for cool mornings and sun block in the afternoon.

We met our clients at the ramp at 6:30 AM. The first thing we notice was the water had risen about six inches. The weather was clear and 23 degrees. We started out fishing for Mackinaw using the same techniques we used on Saturday. After two hours and no action and checking with other boats that had no action either. We switched over to Rapalas and Smithwick’s and tried a faster troll and still nothing. Checking with other boats throughout the day, it was apparent the bite was off. I’m not sure if this was result of the rising water and dropping barometer or just a coincidence.
